We don’t want a novel in this section, but we need to make sure that you have a good sense of your character] Emmeline was born on a rainy November day in 1961. She was to be the first and only child of Henry and Ruth Vance. However Emmeline’s first memories were not of England, her birthplace and country of citizenship, but of India. Both of her parents worked in the ministry in the Department of International Magical Cooperation, Henry as the official diplomat between the British and Indian Ministries of Magic, whose relations had been teetering on difficulty since India’s full Independence about a century earlier. Ruth worked mostly as Henry’s assistant and the two made a very balanced team in dealing with the delicate structure of relations between the two countries. Given that both were very dedicated to their work Emmeline spent most of her childhood in the companionship of her nanny, a local woman named Kasi. Kasi was Emmeline’s only real interaction with people outside of functions that she went to with her parents. Given that and her already quiet nature Emmeline spent most of her time just watching things like plants and animals, observing them and trying to learn all she could. The addition of a tutor as she got older did not change her much. However she discovered a love of books because they fed her desire for information. She was very comfortable in India and when the time came to leave she argued with her parents over it, saying she would not mind eventually going to India’s School of Magic. However Henry relocated his work for a year so that Emmeline could become used to England before going to Hogwarts. Before she had never really stayed very long, occasional visits were all she had had. But she took to England eventually and found it could be just as fascinating as India. Upon arriving at Hogwarts she was sorted into Ravenclaw almost immediately by the sorting hat. The curious and precocious child fit in remarkably with her house, though she did not make very many friends. As always she was fixed on her studies and found it more enjoyable to be in the library studying than finding out what nonsense the other students were up to. Her grades were always near the top if not at the top of the class. Still she made one very close friend in Benjy Fenwick. The two became close and Emmeline broke out of her shell a little thanks to the older boy. Emmeline felt content and the world around her was stable. That was until the Death Eater movement began to start up. At first it had no real meaning until her mother disappeared after leaving work on day. True Emmeline had never been close with either of her parents, but they were still the only family she had and the blow was devastating. Ruth was one of the many claimed by the first war and would eventually be the deciding factor for Emmeline when Benjy mentioned a resistance group called the Order of the Phoenix. Upon graduation along with her new alliance with the Order she managed to secure an internship with St Mungos. While her people skills were not up to par in order to become a healer, her OWLs and NEWTs were both outstanding and she was extremely brilliant. As it would happen she was placed down in the morgue and found herself to be quite happy there. The was little reason to react with other people and bodies were not so chatty. Her placement in one of the few wizarding morgues in London put her at an interesting place in terms of the war. Most bodies that needed to be identified or given a cause of death because of uncertainties were taken there. She ended up as part of the autopsy of several people she knew during the war, much to her displeasure. The war ended all too soon for Emmeline, having claimed her mother and her best friend. Several other people she had grown fond or at least tolerant of in the order also died, leaving her without much of the sense of happiness that many people got at the end. All she felt was an incredible sense of waste. The years continued on and with there being no war there was not quite as much ‘business’ downstairs as there had been. But people died every day and Emmeline quickly set herself out as being exceptionally good at her job. The head coroner took a liking to her and it would have seemed began to prepare her for eventually taking on his job. Emmeline was fine with that and found the old man enjoyable to listen to, with an odd sense of humor that matched her own. Eventually the head coroner died, just a few months before the beginning of the second war. Emmeline was a shoe in for the position and happily took over the place that had oddly enough become like a second home to her. Things were good despite the death of her mentor. Or at least they were until the second war started and the bodies began to pile up again. Emmeline rejoined the order as soon as word had gotten out. She was already located in London so assignments that were located there were easy enough for her to complete and get away from. One mission near the Prime Minister’s house went sour and Emmeline found herself stuck in the same hospital she worked in for a time afterwards. However once she was back on her feet she continued both her duties, both her job as head coroner and as a member of the order. She thought things had settled down again, with the war being over. But then there was the breech and things were looking very ill indeed. Emmeline is ready to stand against what seems to be the majority of her own kind on the side of the muggles. She would rather not see her gurney’s used more than they already are. Occupational History: Head Coroner at St. Mungos Goals: Melding muggle autopsy techniques with magical in order to better understand the human body and what makes it function and fail. Personality: Emmeline is one of those people that muggles would describe as robotic. Very focused on work she finds little time to let loose and enjoy life. Life is to be logical and orderly and she does not abide wasting time and energy on things that are pointless. Because of this she can be a bit narrow in her approach to things because she is not very creative. Her world is one of empirical observation and data collection. History strikes her fancy because of this very fact. To those who actually manage to get close to her though Emmeline has an awkward and odd sense of humor. She honestly finds her work to be relaxing and enjoyable. When faced with social situations she is increasingly awkward, having managed to spend a great deal of her life without extensive human interaction. She is a loner and likes to be that way. When she becomes close to a person she finds that inevitably they are going to leave her so it is better to just leave it be in the first place. While she has an open mind from her work with cultures and history, Emmeline still has a fairly black and white sense of the world at times. She is very literal and it can be grating at times how much so. Because of this she feels things very strongly even if she does not show it. Boggart/Fears: Boggart:A large snake. Likes/Dislikes: Likes: Order, books, history, parks, forests, artifacts, dead people, cats, muggles Dislikes: death eaters, disorder, purists, social situations, snakes, people who talk to much. Affiliation during the First and/or Second War: Light Why?: Raised in a family where diplomacy was the law of the land, Emmeline has always been in a very live and let live sort of mindset. It was the Death Eaters who made the choice to start trying to force people out. However she also sees people as they end up every day, as bodies. She does not see any difference between wizards and muggles because once they’re dead then they are all equal. She stands at 5’3” and is generally shorter than most of the people around her. At that she is a healthy 125 pounds which leaves her with a slim but not extremely skinny frame. She has a more athletic sort of build and holds herself with great purpose. Whenever she is walking she always looks like she’s intent to get somewhere, even if she is simply mulling things over in her head. Her hair is a dark brown that is naturally straight though she occasionally curls it and her eyes are a complimenting hazel.
